Judy currently teaches the introductory physics sequence with algebra and trigonometry. When she is available, she team teaches in our astronomy course and teaches astronomy in UNCA's Continuing Education Program. She has taught at Warren Wilson College, AB Technical Community College, and was chair of the Math Department at the Colegio Americano de Quito in Ecuador (1991). In 1999, before she became full-time, Judy won the UNCA Distinguished Teaching Award for Part-Time Faculty. Judy speaks Spanish and German.
Research Interests - Judy Beck
Judy's early research work was in astronomy. Now she focuses on research involving the teaching of physics and astronomy. For example, she has co-authored physics and astronomy resource manuals for college instructors. She is also regional co-director of the Science Olympiad, which is part of a national program fostering innovative science activities and challenges for middle school students. Judy is also the Science Licensure Coordinator for our Department of Education.
