Sample Program of Study

A sample program of study is given below. Majors should plan their individual programs with the department chair. In this way they will have a tailored program to suit their specific needs and interests. Close planning with the chair is also important to make sure the appropriate upper-level course is offered the semester you need it. Personal long-range planning is encouraged for all majors. Majors should drop in to see the chair any time to review individualized programs and plan for the future.

Note that the sample program given here assumes a strong high school background in mathematics and science. Specific programs are developed for each student depending on the individual backgrounds.

For a physics major interested in teaching licensure options, consultation is necessary with the Department of Education. These programs are typically 5-year programs. The education faculty keep abreast of the certification requirements. Majors in this program have two advisors, the physics chair and the science advisor in the Department of Education. Students in the Honors Program have an additional advisor, the Director of the Honors Program. Also, Undergraduate Research Fellows have an additional advisor, the Director of Undergraduate Research.

Students are strongly recommended to take undergraduate research over the course of several semesters in the junior and senior year. See the departmental research programs by clicking first on Faculty and Staff and then clicking on each photo of the full-time departmental members. You will find a section called Research Interests for each of the full-time faculty.
