Michaela Logue (Micki), recent graduate and double major in physics and math, was a star athlete receiving one of the 58 national NCAA graduate scholarships (study at Notre Dame). Graduating summa cum laude, she was an eight-time member of a Big South All-Academic team and three times was named as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her sport. Micki also did research on an optical study of Polaris at PARI to study its low-amplitude Cepheid characteristics. Click here to download her 2003 summer report (pdf format). She worked under the direction of Dr. Michael Castelaz, astronomer at PARI and adjunct professor at UNCA.

Physics majors get unlimited access to an upper-level lab in order to study and hang loose. Below is Matthew Fisher who received the following offers his senior year: Presidential Fellowship, College of Optics and Photonics, Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers (CREOL), University of Central Florida, $25,000 twelve-month award plus 100% of tuition and fees estimated for an additional $13,500, which he accepted; Graduate Assistantship, Department of Nuclear Engineering, MIT ($1930 per month, September through May) plus tuition, which he declined; Graduate Research Assistantship, Optical Science Center, University of Arizona (academic year salary of $14,187 plus tuition and fees in the amount of $6200 and summer opportunities), which he declined.

UNCA has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for advanced work and research. Below is Sarah Baxter and Charles Hudson in the laser lab. Sarah's offers her senior year were: a $17,150 Fellowship, John Hopkins University, Molecular Biophysics (she accepted); a $15,500 Fellowship, Washington University, St. Louis, Molecular Biophysics (she declined); a $19,000 Fellowship, Vanderbilt University, Biomedical Sciences (she declined).

Jeff Tharp below was awarded a teaching assistantship at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where received a masters in Optical Science and Engineering. He has since joined his former UNCA fellow classmate Matt Fisher in a Ph.D. program at the College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida.

Didn't We Just Have an E&M Exam?

There is a tradition at UNCA for members of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) to regularly conduct astronomical viewing sessions in the evenings for anyone who wants to come and enjoy the night sky.

Our UNCA SPS Chapter has won an annual SPS award for the past several years. Typically 20 to 30 chapters out of the over 700 chapters across the nation are given awards by the National SPS Office each year.

We also have a chapter of the national physics honors society, Sigma Pi Sigma at UNCA. We regularly have induction ceremonies to honor students that meet the level of achievement to join the society.
