More About Students

Andrew Nicholson (left) is a 2005 physics major graduate from UNCA. Read his research paper on voting and the Markov process, which he worked on under the direction of our Dr. Sam Kaplan, Department of Mathematics. UNCA physics majors draw from a variety of advisors both inside and outside the department.

Tim Means (right) is a 2000 physics graduate (B.S.) who returned to receive his second degree (B.A.) in mathematics (2005). He received a teaching assistantship ($1300/month) from the Ph.D. Astronomy Program at the University of Washington in Seattle. The breadth of training received at UNCA allows our students to pursue work in many related fields.

Quantum Pizza, Quantum Final, 6:30 pm, May 2, 2005

The best thing about this exam is Doc's wife here bringing us pizza
as we waste our way through this exam at dinner time.

Maybe After This Piece I'll Nail That Eigenvalue.

Ryan Kapler sips soda during Quantum Final Pizza Party. He emails our physics Prof. Katherine Whatley a few weeks later: "I would like to thank you for writing those letters of recommendation for me last semester. I was offered positions at several grad schools. I ended up accepting the offer from the University of Tennessee. They are waiving tuition and fees and providing a 20,000 dollar Teaching Assistantship. It also includes health care benefits. A few weeks ago I also found out that I was also awarded a Fellowship worth 2,500 dollars. My future seems very exciting." Ryan Kapler via email
